Synopsis
In Girona after the War of the Spanish Succession, Pere Pruna scrapes by gambling with dice and selling verses to lovers who are poor at rhyming. One day he finds a demon trapped in a bottle, which offers him a deal: free it, and it will lift him out of poverty. The novel reworks the tradition of pacts with the devil and the Catalan tradition of journeys to hell, with tunnels and passageways leading to unexpected connections.
