Synopsis

In the Fractured Realm, where books are dangerous, regulated things, Quillam Mye taught his daughter to read before he died. Eight years later twelve-year-old Mosca Mye, named for the fly-catching god of the hour she was born in, is an orphan with an inauspicious name and an all-consuming hunger for words, trapped in the care of her cruel uncle and aunt in a dreary village. Her chance comes with the smooth-talking poet and con man Eponymous Clent, locked in the village stocks: she frees him, accidentally burning down the mill as she does, and follows him, with her homicidal goose Saracen, to the city of Mandelion. There, working as Clent's spying assistant, she becomes entangled in the city's politics, in the smuggling of lead to rebels and in the murder of the barge captain who carried Saracen there, and begins to discover complicated truths about the world she lives in and the power of words.
