Synopsis
Twelve-year-old Emma Gray lives in a house where, night after night, her father, a respected local doctor, abuses her while her mother sleeps on. Emma copes by retreating into imagination. In her inner adventures she joins her sister Ginny, who died long before, and the two girls fly together above the world, free of the house and the father. The novel treats a painful subject through a story of fantasy as refuge.
