Synopsis

Fortune's Fool follows Ekaterina, the seventh daughter of the Sea King, who works as a spy for her family while maintaining her royal status among the Five Hundred Kingdoms, guided as always by the pervasive force known as the Tradition that pushes people toward familiar fairy-tale roles. Sent as an emissary to investigate curious developments in a neighboring kingdom, she takes particular interest in Sasha, the seventh son of the king of Belarus, suspecting that his reputation as a harmless fool conceals real depth and competence beneath the surface. Her mission goes badly wrong when she is trapped in a castle at the mercy of a possessive jinn, leaving Ekaterina to rely on her wit and resourcefulness to survive captivity and find a way free before anyone realizes she is even missing.

Notes

  • From the series record (Tales of the Five Hundred Kingdoms): A completed 7-book sequence of standalone fairy-tale-retelling novels sharing one meta-fictional secondary world ("The Tradition", a narrative-causality force that pushes real lives toward familiar fairy-tale shapes), published 2004-2012 by Luna/Harlequin.
