Synopsis
Grey Sister, the second novel in the Book of the Ancestor trilogy, picks up where Red Sister left off, as Nona Grey and her fellow novices continue their training at Sweet Mercy Convent, working toward advancement into one of its specialized orders, including the warrior path of Red Sister or the assassin's path of Grey Sister. Nona is driven by two urgent goals: recovering the magical shipheart stolen by Yisht, an agent of the emperor's sister Sherzal, and finding out the truth behind the death of her friend Hessa. Her search leads her into mysterious caves beneath the convent, while beyond its walls a failing artificial moon lets the ice sheets encroach on the habitable Corridor, pushing nations toward war. When an Inquisition arrives at Sweet Mercy hunting heretics, Nona is forced to leave the convent's shelter and continue her quest in the wider world.

Notes
- From the series record (Book of the Ancestor): A completed trilogy set on Abeth, a different world from Lawrence's Broken Empire -- explicitly named as a separate continuity at Broken Empire's own admission, confirmed here rather than assumed. Red Sister was a 2018 David Gemmell Legend Award finalist for Best Fantasy Novel, independently corroborated via both Wikipedia and sfadb.com; no individual award record was found for Grey Sister or Holy Sister in either source.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
