Synopsis

The first novel of the Harry Potter series introduces an orphaned boy raised by his aunt and uncle, the Dursleys, on Privet Drive. On his eleventh birthday Harry discovers that he is a wizard, that his parents were killed by the dark wizard Voldemort, and that he survived the same attack as an infant, leaving him with a lightning-shaped scar. Brought into the wizarding world by the gamekeeper Hagrid, he enrolls at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he makes two close friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and takes up the sport of Quidditch. Under the headmaster Albus Dumbledore and the suspicious Potions master Severus Snape, Harry and his friends come to believe someone inside the school is plotting to steal a magical stone that grants immortality, and uncover a plot by Voldemort to obtain it.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
