Synopsis
In the absence of a king, the land of Horngard has been given over to bandits, its potential squandered and its people exploited, and its empty throne cannot stay empty for long. The powerful Dragon, seeing its strategic importance, moves to install one of his own dragonkin there, breaking up families to do so. But other forces also covet Horngard, and they will not let it go without a fight. The fates of two pairs of siblings, Mikael and Camwyn, Gwenno and Aris, hold the key to Horngard's future.

Notes
- Retailers disagree on its number within Paladin's Legacy (book 3 on one listing, book 6 on another); placed sixth in publication order, after Crown of Renewal (2014).
- From the series record (Paladin's Legacy): 5-novel direct-sequel sequence (2010-2014), continuing immediately after The Deed of Paksenarrion. Not to be confused with The Legacy of Gird, a differently-named earlier prequel duology.
Neighbouring works
Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
- Publication order, within the series Paladin's Legacy: position 6 of 6: previous Crown of Renewal (2014)
