Synopsis

Jirel of Joiry, collecting stories by C.L. Moore first published in pulp magazines beginning in 1934 and gathered together in 1969, centers on Jirel, the proud and formidably tough female ruler of her own domain in a violent, quasi-medieval France. Ruling without a husband or male protector in a world that assumes she needs one, Jirel commands her own soldiers and defends her lands through force of will as much as force of arms. Across the collected stories, her adventures repeatedly carry her beyond the borders of the ordinary, mortal world and into direct, dangerous contact with the supernatural, confronting sorcery, otherworldly realms, and forces her sword alone cannot defeat. The collection was notable on first publication for centering a woman as swashbuckling hero rather than as prize or victim in the pulp sword-and-sorcery tradition.

Notes

  • Collects all five original Jirel of Joiry novelettes ("Black God's Kiss", "Black God's Shadow", "Jirel Meets Magic", "The Dark Land", "Hellsgarde"; Weird Tales, 1934-1939) as first gathered in this 1969 standalone collection. Reduced from 5 separate book records to this 1 on 2026-08-31: the rating platform this project uses has no individual work page for any single novelette -- every listing found under a novelette's own title resolves to this same collection and reports the same aggregate rating figures regardless of which story's name is on the listing.
  • From the series record (Jirel of Joiry): The five original sword-and-sorcery Jirel stories, originally published in Weird Tales between 1934 and 1939, tracked here as the single 1969 collection that first gathered them ("Jirel of Joiry") rather than as five separate book records: the rating platform this project uses has no individual work page for any one novelette on its own.
