Synopsis
Alex, a Christian political activist, falls in with Margrethe, a cruise ship hostess who worships the Norse gods. Together they survive a shipwreck and an earthquake, and then find themselves slipping from one alternate reality to the next, each with its own rules and its own disasters. The upheavals are attributed to the trickster Loki, acting with the permission of Jehovah. Each loss and setback strips something more from them, and Alex begins to see his own situation in the story of the Biblical Job. When the two are separated, he sets off through timeless space to find her again.
