Synopsis

Anna Mae Jones, daughter of a coal miner in Appalachia, is turned out of her family home after her father dies of black lung disease, leaving her with nowhere to go until she moves in with an aunt who turns out to be a gifted Elemental practitioner. Under her aunt's guidance, Anna Mae begins to discover and develop her own magical abilities while adjusting to a household far removed from the mining town she grew up in. Her new life is upended when she falls for a talented local stonemason who subsequently vanishes while pursuing a dangerous magical goal deep within the mountains, forcing Anna Mae to venture into perilous underground depths herself in an attempt to find and rescue him.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Elemental Masters): Loosely connected fairy-tale retellings unified by a shared elemental-magic system rather than a continuous cast.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings, but they resolve to the exact same sequence for this book, so one combined line is shown instead of two identical ones.
