Synopsis

This installment of Piers Anthony's Xanth series follows Wenda Woodwife, a nymph-like companion of the character Jumper who has a lovely front but no back, being hollow behind, and who speaks in a distinctive forest dialect full of wood-related puns. Wenda is given the daunting job of transporting a boulder made of petrified reverse wood, a substance so unsettling that it turns anyone else who encounters it to stone, effectively terrifying them into paralysis. Because the boulder is harmless to her, she becomes the only one who can safely carry it across Xanth. The novel follows her journey with this hazardous cargo, weaving in the series' familiar mix of puns, magical creatures, and comic mishaps as she works to complete her task without endangering herself or those she meets.
