Synopsis

In 1365, during the Hundred Years' War, Pierre Cordwain, a former mercenary captain, assassin and spy, returns to the county of Kosigan, which he fled when his father died. At the same moment a Franco-Burgundian negotiation is under way, a shape-shifting Italian adventuress travels through the county of Albret, and a dragon appears in the sky for the first time in centuries. The novel asks what links these events and who is trying to bring down the Duke of Burgundy and wipe out the Kosigan line. It is set several years after the earlier books and is presented as readable by newcomers as well as long-time followers.
