Synopsis
Twelve-year-old Lalani Sarita lives on Sanlagita, an island parched by drought, with her sick mother. Her father died on an earlier voyage, and the two of them share a home with a cruel uncle and cousin. When she learns that something across the dangerous sea might heal her mother, Lalani leaves the island to find it. The journey draws on Filipino folklore and brings her to a mountain whose creatures are described in passages addressed directly to the reader. Along the way Lalani, who is loyal, kind and optimistic, has to rely on her wits and her kindness to reach her goal.
