Synopsis
In London during the First World War, Sarah Brown sits on a War Savings committee, tired of its dull charity work and lonely in her own life. Into one of its meetings bursts Thelma Bennett Watkins, a witch who travels by a broomstick named Harold. When Sarah goes to return the broomstick, she finds Thelma at the House of Living Alone, a residence for people who want solitude and have no wish for the comforts or interference of hotels and landladies. Magic and everyday wartime life run side by side, and Sarah is drawn into a circle of odd characters that includes fairies, a dragon, a suitor for Thelma and a rival German witch who must be faced during a Zeppelin raid.
