Synopsis

Lost Burgundy, published by Mary Gentle in 2000, concludes the Book of Ash and won the Sidewise Award for Alternate History. With Burgundy under direct siege and the wild machines' plan for the world nearing completion, Ash and her company face the war's decisive confrontation, forced to weigh the survival of the duchy she has sworn to defend against forces operating on a scale far beyond ordinary warfare. The mercenary captain who began the series as a scavenging orphan must now decide how far she is willing to go, and what she is willing to risk, to stop a catastrophe that threatens not just Burgundy but the shape of history itself. Interwoven with the historical narrative, the modern-day translator's notes reach their own conclusions about how a document like Ash's story could exist at all, closing out the series' alternate-history framing device.

Notes

  • From the series record (Ash: A Secret History (The Book of Ash)): One continuous novel, published as a single volume in the UK (Gollancz, 2000) and split into these four US paperback volumes (Eos, 1999-2000); each volume is catalogued separately here since each was published, sold, and rated individually, the same treatment already applied to The Lord of the Rings' three volumes.
