Synopsis
Lyorn finds Vlad Taltos taking refuge inside a theater in order to escape assassins sent by the Left Hand of the Jhereg, the sorceresses seeking revenge for events that concluded in the earlier novel Hawk. Trapped among a theatrical troupe as his hiding place, Vlad has to find a way out of his predicament with help from longtime allies including Sethra Lavode and his old associate Kragar, all while becoming increasingly entangled in the theater company's own affairs and productions. The novel shifts between Vlad's familiar first-person narration and unusual third-person passages, and includes a running thread of musical theater parodies built around Dragaeran themes, lending the story an unusually playful, self-aware tone even as the threat from the Left Hand remains serious. Vlad's efforts to extract himself from danger become bound up with the fate of the performers sheltering him.

Notes
- From the series record (Vlad Taltos): 17 novels (1983-2024) of a planned 19-book structure (17 House-named books + Taltos, named for the protagonist, + a final closing volume, The Last Contract, not yet written; Chreotha, the 18th, is also not yet written). Internal chronology is contested among fan sources and explicitly not recorded here, see the notes on Jhereg.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
