Synopsis
Two years after the end of The Amber Spyglass, fifteen-year-old Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon sit high on the roof of Jordan College, gazing down on the streets of Oxford, when their peace is shattered by a flock of enraged starlings intent on knocking another bird out of the sky, a bird that Lyra and Pan realise is a witch's daemon. The daemon, Ragi, takes refuge with them and asks Lyra to guide him to the alchemist Sebastian Makepeace in the district of Jericho, bringing word of a terrible sickness spreading in the north and claiming that only Lyra can help. But is he friend or foe? The journey through Oxford proves more dangerous than she expected. The book also gathers a fold-out map of Lyra's Oxford, a postcard from Mary Malone and other missives that seem to have slipped from her world into ours.
