Synopsis
Ben Holiday, a depressed Chicago trial lawyer still grieving the deaths of his wife and unborn child, impulsively buys a magical kingdom called Landover from a mail-order catalogue advertised by the mysterious firm Rosen's Department Store, hoping for a fresh start. On arrival he finds the kingdom far from the storybook realm he imagined: it is in ruins, its feuding barons refusing to recognize any king, its peasants hopeless and skeptical of yet another outsider claiming the throne, a marauding dragon named Strabo terrorizing the countryside, and the powerful witch Nightshade plotting against him from the shadows. Accompanied only by an inept court wizard, a talking dog turned into a man, and a small band of misfit retainers, Ben must decide whether Landover is worth the fight he never expected to take on.
