Synopsis
It is a day like any other at Number Seventeen Cherry Tree Lane until a telegram arrives with momentous news: Miss Andrew, the Holy Terror, Mr. Banks's dreaded childhood governess, is coming to live in the house next door. Number Eighteen has always stood empty, and so it has become the treasure of the lane: each neighbour has furnished it in imagination with the tenant of their dreams, and now the dream is to be replaced by the one person everyone fears. With Miss Andrew comes Luti, a boy from the South Seas whom she is "civilising", and who is quietly dying of homesickness. The last Mary Poppins book, written when its author was nearly ninety, is less about the nanny than about the lane itself, and about how, in her own magical, whimsical way, she sends a homesick child home.
