Synopsis
Moon Witch, Spider King retells the events of Black Leopard, Red Wolf from the perspective of Sogolon, the formidable Moon Witch who joined Tracker's expedition in the first novel, now recounting her own long and turbulent life and her version of the search for the missing boy. Her account reaches back across a rivalry spanning a century with the Aesi, the king's powerful chancellor, whose closeness to the throne is described as making the two of them function like the many limbs of a single spider of influence. Told as Sogolon's own contested history of victories, defeats and survival in a world that consistently underestimates her, the novel functions as a companion volume that complicates and reframes the first book's narrative through the eyes of a woman who has spent a century resisting the authority arrayed against her.
