Synopsis
The story follows the Rom, the Romany people of modern Canada, who live insular and secretive lives around the Ottawa region. It opens with a fire, a rescued fiddle and a gruesome murder. A dark-haired killer, nicknamed Mulengro for his command of ghosts, begins to murder Rom whom the community regards as marhime, or unclean. The fiddler Janfri, who passes as a mainstream musician under the name John Owczarek, and Ola, a seer with telekinetic powers who lives apart from the Rom, are drawn into the hunt. Two city detectives pursue the killer without any preparation for the supernatural forces involved as the murders grow more horrific.
