Synopsis

When his father, the revered general Fergys Thirsk, dies defending King Magnus of Morgravia, fourteen-year-old Wyl Thirsk inherits command of the Morgravian legions and a duty to protect the king's son, Crown Prince Celimus, a cruel and arrogant young man who delights in humiliating him. Celimus forces Wyl to witness the torture and burning of Myrren, a young woman condemned as a witch chiefly because her eyes are of different colours; when Wyl offers her water, the dying girl leaves him her great dog, Knave, and another, unknown gift. Years later, as Magnus dies and Celimus schemes to conquer neighbouring Briavel, Wyl is sent to arrange the new king's marriage to Princess Valentyna, with his beloved sister Ylena held hostage and a mercenary escort, led by Romen Koreldy, ordered to murder him. Only as Koreldy's blade enters his heart does Wyl begin to understand what Myrren gave him.
