Synopsis

Richard Mayhew is a young Scotsman settled into an unremarkable office job and an engagement in modern London when he stops on the street to help a badly injured young woman named Door, ignoring his fiancée's objections. The encounter costs him his old life: after Door is taken away by the mysterious Marquis de Carabas, Richard finds himself erased from the awareness of everyone around him, losing his job, his flat, and his fiancée as though he had never existed. Desperate to become visible again, he follows Door down into London Below, a sprawling, perilous shadow-world beneath the city's streets, sewers, and forgotten stations, populated by those who have fallen through the cracks of ordinary society.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
