Synopsis
In the Kingdom of Underhill, young Prince Amatus drinks too much of the Wine of the Gods, and as a result half of his body disappears. King Boniface, his father, has the four people he blames for the accident put to death and then hires replacements for them. A year and a day later, four strangers arrive at court and become the prince's Companions. Among them are Sir John Slitgizzard, the Twisted Man and Psyche. The Companions know they are characters in a fairy tale and often comment on it. Together they follow Amatus as he grows up, travels to distant lands, meets goblins and the undead, falls in love and eventually comes to the throne, in a story told with humour.
