Synopsis

At eight the author dreamed of a girl queen named Clair who travels between worlds to recruit adventurous girls. Clair adopts CJ, who becomes her best friend and a princess, and CJ leads a gang of girls known as the M girls against villains such as the mage Kwenz and the usurper Glotulae and her son Prince Jonnicake. The book tells how the gang came together and how the Duel to the Pie began, in the voice of a young narrator writing up her adventures in a notebook.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
