Synopsis

Odd is a thrall on a remote island, serving Gydje, a feared sorceress whose power reaches across the whole Flat Sea. She abuses him because she fears his strength. Odd has no known family, yet he dreams of becoming a warrior in the king's royal guard, a test open only to free men. When Gydje decides to offer him as a sacrifice to the gods, Odd strikes her down and flees. He sets out on a long journey toward the king's hall, hoping to earn the place he has dreamed of. The first book of a Viking-age fantasy trilogy.
