Synopsis
The fourteenth short-story anthology in the Valdemar series gathers eighteen stories from a mix of debut and established authors, including a new tale titled "Temper" featuring the character Kerowyn, contributed by series creator Mercedes Lackey. The stories follow the kingdom's Heralds, an ancient order bonded for life to telepathic, horse-like Companions who serve as emissaries, spies, judges, diplomats, scouts, counselors, and warriors, along with other figures such as Bards and Healers. Several entries continue ongoing character cycles from earlier anthologies, including stories following the student Tarek Strand and a set focused on elderly Heralds, while the collection as a whole also includes a nonfiction essay on the Hawkbrothers. As with other volumes in the series, the stories are independent rather than forming one continuous plot.
