Synopsis
Pretenders to the Throne of God, the fourth novel in the Tyrant Philosophers series, brings back the survivors of the earlier books as the Palleseen Sway launches what is framed as its final campaign, an assault aimed at the so-called First Cause, the supposed ultimate source of magical power in the world. Characters introduced across City of Last Chances, House of Open Wounds and Days of Shattered Faith converge as the occupying regime pushes its rationalist ideology to its furthest extreme, setting up a large-scale confrontation between the Palleseen and the magical and divine forces they have spent the series trying to suppress. As the empire's ambitions reach their limit, the novel continues the series' focus on ordinary people and minor gods caught between competing systems of power.
