Synopsis

Set some years after Empire of Sand, this companion novel follows Arwa, a young widow bound into lifelong service to the imperial family after surviving the massacre of her husband's household, and Zahir, a disgraced, illegitimate prince who turns to forbidden ritual magic in a desperate attempt to protect what remains of his family's claim to power. The fate of the crumbling Ambhan Empire increasingly rests on the two of them as they journey together into the Realm of Ash, a mysterious otherworldly dreamscape where the dead can be reached and ancestral memories relived, though every visit exacts a steep personal cost. As Arwa and Zahir walk through fragments of their own and their families' pasts in search of answers, they are forced to reckon with whether an empire built on so much suffering is truly worth the sacrifices still being asked of them.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Books of Ambha): Core Canon = both novels of the completed duology (Orbit, 2018-2019). Confirmed a separate, unrelated universe from Suri's The Jasmine Throne / Burning Kingdoms, already in this canon -- different world and characters, confirmed at that admission; both records are cross-referenced as being by the same author.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings, but they resolve to the exact same sequence for this book, so one combined line is shown instead of two identical ones.
