Synopsis

Two years after the events of The Lies of Locke Lamora, the con artists Locke Lamora and Jean Tannen are working as professional gamblers in the island city-state of Tal Verrar, having relocated after the turmoil of their last job in Camorr. When the city's ruling archon forces them into a dangerous scheme involving piracy on the open sea, the two friends must juggle an elaborate heist targeting the infamous Sinspire gambling house while also navigating threats from ruthless crime lords, calculating sorcerers, and a fragile alliance with a pirate crew whose loyalties are far from certain, all while keeping their true identities hidden from the city's other power brokers.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Gentleman Bastards): Author-confirmed 7-book plan (Locus Online interview, 2013: 'there will be seven books and I can't break that rule'). Book 4, The Thorn of Emberlain, remains unpublished/undated as of the author's own July 2026 interview, displayed as in-progress per Constitution Article 8, not registered as a book (no confirmed title-page facts to record) and not penalized in any future ranking.
