Synopsis
A retelling of the Senegalese folktale of Ansige Karamba the Glutton, the novel follows Paama, a gifted cook who finally leaves her foolish, endlessly gluttonous husband Ansige and returns to her family's village, hoping to resume a quieter life. Her decision to leave, and the scenes of comic chaos Ansige causes trying to win her back, draw the unexpected attention of the djombi, powerful and immortal beings who observe human affairs from just beyond ordinary sight. One of them, displeased with how he has wielded it, strips a mysterious and dangerous artifact called the Chaos Stick from its previous keeper and grants it to Paama instead, a tool capable of bending the subtle underlying forces of the world itself, leaving her to decide how, and whether, such power should be used.
