Synopsis
In 1963 on the South Carolina coast, eleven-year-old twins Jezebel and Jay Turner are still grieving their grandmother, a respected Gullah rootworker, and the father who vanished years before. Their uncle Doc agrees to teach them rootwork, the folk magic their family has practiced for generations, and the twins begin to notice that they have gifts of their own. Whispers drift out of the marsh and Jezebel's doll seems to move by itself. Meanwhile school integration is arriving, Jezebel has skipped a grade and faces bullies, and a local deputy has been harassing families who practice rootwork. As ordinary and supernatural threats gather around the town, Jezebel has to learn how deep her family's power runs and decide how to use it.
