Synopsis
The first novel opens as James "Sandman Slim" Stark claws his way out of Hell and back to Los Angeles after eleven years spent fighting as a gladiator against demons in the arenas of Hell. Stark, once a member of a magic circle whose members betrayed and murdered his girlfriend and sent him to Hell in his place, arrives half-mad with rage and newly toughened by his imprisonment. He finds a city he barely recognizes, threaded through with vampires, angels and other supernatural interests operating just out of sight of ordinary Angelenos. Stark sets about tracking down the circle members responsible for his exile and his lover's death, relying on stolen magical relics, black-market sorcery and violent improvisation rather than any formal training.

- From the series record (Sandman Slim): Complete 12-novel urban-fantasy sequence (2009-2021) following James Stark, a magician who escaped an eleven-year exile in Hell to hunt down the people who murdered his girlfriend and sent him there, working cases across a supernatural Los Angeles. "Devil in the Dollhouse" (2012), a novella slotting between books 3 and 4, is kept out of Core as companion material, not one of the twelve main-sequence novels.
