Synopsis
A. Clarence Shandon, a cynical and self-satisfied American businessman who has never cared for books, is the sole survivor when the steamer Naglfar sinks at sea. Clinging to a spar, he finds it already occupied by Golias, a wandering bard of many names, who tells him they are near the Commonwealth, a land Shandon has never heard of. Nicknamed "Silverlock" for the white streak in his hair, he is led by Golias from island to mainland through a country peopled entirely by figures from myth, legend and literature, from Vikings and the hall of Heorot to Natty Bumppo, Robin Hood and the Mad Tea Party. Failing to recognise most of the famous company he meets, Shandon stumbles from one misadventure to the next on a long picaresque journey that slowly begins to change how he sees the world.
