Synopsis

Sky Dragons, the final collaboration between Anne McCaffrey and her son Todd McCaffrey, continues the Third Pass storyline of Pern, where a devastating dragon illness has left the Weyrs with too few dragons to fight Thread effectively. Xhinna, established in the preceding volumes as the first female rider of a blue dragon and now the first female Weyrleader, leads a company of blue and green dragonriders on a time-displaced expedition to a set of previously uninhabited islands. There, away from the traditions that reserve leadership and breeding rights for gold and bronze dragons, the group works to build a new settlement and grow their numbers enough to make a difference against Thread, contending with unfamiliar predators, the strain of establishing an unconventional breeding Weyr, and skepticism from those who question Xhinna's authority.

Notes

  • From the series record (Dragonriders of Pern: the Third Pass era): 5 novels co-credited 'Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey' on their original editions, set in the 'Third Pass' prequel era (~500 AL). Sky Dragons (2012) was completed and published after Anne McCaffrey's November 2011 death but retains joint credit as the concluding volume of a collaborative project begun while she was alive.
