Synopsis
Down a narrow, dank alley that is easy to miss, a small black iron door is set into the wall: no handle, no keyhole, but at a touch it swings open onto the sunlit garden of an old house that does not quite make sense, too grand for its shabby neighbourhood and too large for the space it occupies. A stranger greets you by name and invites you in, and at first you will not want to leave. Beginning in 1979, when a boy called Nathan Bishop and his mother are invited to visit the respected Lady Grayer, and reaching its conclusion around Hallowe'en 2015, the novel follows the "guests" who are summoned to Slade House every nine years, on the last Saturday of October, and who vanish from the world outside. Who chooses them, and why, waits in the long attic at the top of the stairs.
Where it sits
- Universe: The Bone Clocks / Slade House
- Series: not part of a registered series (standalone work within its universe)
- Author: David Mitchell
Notes
- Sceptre, 27 October 2015. Grew from the Twitter story 'The Right Sort' (2014); the publisher describes it as inhabiting the same universe as The Bone Clocks, and its Marinus is the Horologist of that novel.
Neighbouring works
Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
- Publication order, within The Bone Clocks / Slade House (standalone work): position 2 of 2: previous The Bone Clocks (2014)
