Synopsis
In the kingdom around the castle of Austerneve, thirteen-year-old Tymmon lives with his father, Komus, the court jester. One day a masked man in a black helmet carries Komus away, and Tymmon learns that the kidnappers intend to take him as well. He slips out of the castle with his flute and his father's jester's cap and escapes into the Sombrous Forest, a place of wolves and strange beings that people are told to avoid. There he meets a huge, silent, doglike creature that he takes to be a gargoyle, and the creature takes him in and seems to understand him. Tymmon later reaches a town, sees how little the poor have under their noble rulers, and finds he can earn a living by playing music and telling his father's tales, while he tries to learn what happened to Komus.
