Synopsis
This novella is set in the world of the Legend of Eli Monpress, four years before the events of the first novel in the main series. It follows Miranda Lyonette, then a young apprentice at the Spirit Court, whose father arrives intending to bring her home and arrange her marriage. Rather than accept the future her family has planned, Miranda becomes fixated on a caged ghosthound that every other Spiritualist has given up on reaching, and she sets out to earn the wary, dangerous animal's trust on her own. The story follows her efforts to balance her family's expectations against her ambitions within the Spirit Court, as the bond she forms with the ghosthound becomes more important to her than the safe, conventional path being offered to her.
