Synopsis

Starling House, published by Alix E. Harrow in 2023, is set in the fading town of Eden, Kentucky, long dependent on the coal company Gravely Power and worn down by decades of environmental and economic decline. Opal, scraping by and desperate to earn enough to send her younger brother to a better school, takes a housekeeping job at Starling House, a decaying Gothic mansion wrapped in local legend and rumor. The house was built by Eleanor Starling, a reclusive widow who wrote a strange, unsettling children's book called Underland before vanishing from history, and it is now occupied by her last descendant, the brooding, reclusive Arthur. As Opal is drawn deeper into the house's secrets, she also attracts the attention of Elizabeth Baine, a corporate agent for Gravely Power who threatens Opal's guardianship of her brother to pressure her into spying on the house from within.
