Synopsis

For over a century a bitter dispute simmered over how the High King is chosen, and the royal line that was passed over kept its anger alive. One of its sons, Arkov of Garia, seizes the throne by treachery and armed force. In his haste to kill the king and queen, he does not confirm the death of their young son, Prince Reyer, who is spirited away. Reyer is raised and trained on a distant island ruled by Elves by a trusted captain of the slain king. Now grown, he learns of his lineage and gathers loyalists to challenge the usurper, whose forces far outnumber his own.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series Other Mithgar novels: position 7 of 7: previous City of Jade (2008)
  • Internal chronology, within Mithgar: position 14 of 14: previous City of Jade (2008)
