Synopsis

Set about twenty years before Wild Magic, Tempests and Slaughter follows a young Arram Draper, later known to Tortall as the mage Numair Salmalin, as he begins his education at the Imperial University of Carthak. Accepted as its youngest student because of his prodigious talent, Arram studies alongside two future companions, the warrior-in-training Prince Ozorne and the aspiring warrior Varice, and the three grow close as they navigate the university's demanding curriculum. As Arram's magical gifts continue to outpace his years, he is drawn deeper into advanced and increasingly perilous fields of study, while the imperial court of Carthak, with its rigid hierarchies and simmering political currents, shapes the friendships and ambitions of all three students. The novel traces Arram's early growth as a mage against the backdrop of an empire whose stability is more fragile than it appears.
