Synopsis
After their mother, a drug addict, drowns, the teenager Eliss and her younger half-breed brother join the crew of a huge river barge, the Bird of the River. Eliss must prove she can stay aboard, and she becomes a sharp-eyed spotter of snags and other river hazards. Krelan, a trained assassin travelling as a passenger, is searching for the head of a dead nobleman so that it can be buried with his body, and he needs her help. The barge's journey takes it past cities and cultures along the river, and it faces attacks by pirates. The novel is self-contained and has only a few references to the earlier books.
