Synopsis

Set in 1935, this novella of the Mythago Wood cycle follows psychologist George Huxley during his expeditions into the ancient, myth-generating Ryhope Wood. After a violent encounter with a mythical stallion deep in the forest, George finds himself confronted by a second, altered version of himself, a strange duplicate born of the wood's power. This other Huxley begins inserting itself into George's home and family life and into his private notebooks, blurring the line between the two men. As the disturbances escalate, George is drawn into a tense pursuit back toward the ancient Horse Shrine to confront his double and settle what has been unleashed. The story serves as an early chapter in the Huxley family's long entanglement with Ryhope Wood, exploring the strain the forest places on them well before the events of the better-known novels in the cycle.

Notes

  • Novella-and-short-story collection set in the Ryhope Wood continuity; companion material, not a Core novel.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within Mythago Wood (standalone work): position 3 of 7: previous Lavondyss (1988) · next The Hollowing (1993)
