Synopsis
In the village of Faudace, the foundling Adelrune lives with his adoptive parents under a strict code called the Rule. In the attic he finds an old illustrated volume, The Book of Knights, and its tales make him long for a different life. He is also haunted by a doll with a bloodstained face that he glimpsed in a toyshop window, and he vows to rescue her. At twelve he runs away to find Riander, a trainer of knights, who agrees to teach him in return for six years of his life. His final test is to discover his own weapons and armour, and it sends him across a strange land of monsters, ships and queens as he searches for the truth about his origins.
