Synopsis

The Cardinal's Blades, published by Pierre Pevel in 2007, opens Les Lames du Cardinal in a version of seventeenth-century France where dragons live openly alongside humans. Cardinal Richelieu reassembles a disbanded company of agents and former musketeers, the Cardinal's Blades, to track down a missing Spanish nobleman whose disappearance threatens to unsettle the kingdom's fragile diplomatic balance. As the Blades pursue their assignment through the intrigues of the French court, they uncover a far larger threat: a secret order of dragon-sorcerers quietly working to expand its influence over the kingdom from the shadows. Reunited after years apart, the Blades must set aside old grievances and rebuild trust in each other quickly if they are to counter a conspiracy reaching further into the court than any of them initially suspects.

Notes

  • From the series record (Les Lames du Cardinal): Pierre Pevel's swashbuckling historical fantasy trilogy: dragons and secret agents in the France of Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
