Synopsis

The Dark Mirror opens the Bridei Chronicles in sixth-century Pictish Scotland, following a young nobleman named Bridei who is sent away from his family at an early age to be fostered and educated by Broichan, the king's powerful and enigmatic druid, at the settlement of Pitnochie. Broichan's training and the mysterious tasks he sets for Bridei seem aimed at shaping the boy into an instrument for some greater purpose that Broichan has not yet revealed. One night Bridei discovers an abandoned infant girl of unusual, seemingly otherworldly origin, and takes her in, naming her Tuala; the two children grow up together at Pitnochie, forming a close bond even as their separate destinies begin to take shape around them.
