Synopsis
Prince Freelorn fears that he is a coward, but he grows in strength and insight as he fights to take the throne of Arlen. He seeks the visible and spiritual emblems of office so he can unseat his usurping half-brother Cillmod and Cillmod's adviser Rian, both tainted by the Shadow, an ancient enemy of the Goddess from whom all life flows. Herewiss, Freelorn's lover, the only man in a thousand years to control the Flame of Power, stands with him. Segnbora goes to seek the support of the dragons, who once shared the world with humanity, while Queen Eftgan of neighbouring Darthen musters her forces for a battle between good and evil.
