Synopsis

Sir Brian of Castle Smythe, Jim's closest friend, wants to travel to the Holy Land city of Palmyra to find Sir Geoffrey de Chaney and formally request his blessing to marry Geoffrey's daughter, Geronde, so Jim, now known in this alternate fourteenth-century England as Sir James of Malencontri, agrees to accompany him on the journey. Once in Palmyra, the two discover that Sir Geoffrey has reinvented himself as a wealthy merchant named Murad, who claims to labor under a dreadful curse that prevents him from ever returning home. Their investigation into the curse leads them to a sorcerer named Ibn-Tariq, who has summoned a powerful demon called Ahriman for his own schemes, forcing Jim to draw on his magical training, and his part-time dragon form, to confront forces well beyond anything he encountered back in England.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Dragon Knight): Nine-novel portal-fantasy series (1976-2000) about Jim Eckert, a modern graduate student pulled into a parallel fantasy world and transformed into a dragon, who must navigate a mixed cast of dragons, knights and magical creatures to rescue his fiancee. Opened with a British Fantasy Award-winning novel expanded from a 1957 short story; completed with the ninth volume in 2000, before Dickson's death in 2001, no further installments planned or announced.
