Synopsis

After his mother's death, Nick Reynaud, a clever young runaway, flees his abusive uncle and cousin and collapses on the porch of a rural bookshop in winter. Its owner, Smallbone, calls himself an Evil Wizard, wants an apprentice, and renames the boy Foxkin. Apprenticeship turns out to mean mostly chores, while the sentient books on the shop's shelves quietly teach Nick what Smallbone will not. Smallbone is also busy keeping the townspeople and a pack of shapeshifting coyote bikers in line, and some of the farm animals are former apprentices under enchantment. When Smallbone's old rival, the French wizard Fidelou, turns his attention to the town, Nick must put his talent for lying and his new learning to use.
