Synopsis
Thirteen-year-old Tal lives in the Castle, an ancient structure built above an eternally dark, sunless world, where every member of the ruling Chosen must complete a coming-of-age ritual by capturing a Sunstone, a device that channels light and magic. When his father goes missing during an expedition and his mother falls dangerously ill without the light a Sunstone would provide, Tal is forced to attempt the dangerous ritual himself, alone and unprepared. After he is caught trying to steal a replacement Sunstone and thrown from the Castle into the Dark World below, he is rescued by the Icecarls, a clan of tribal ice-dwellers, and meets Milla, a young warrior who reluctantly agrees to help him find his way back.

Notes
- From the series record (The Seventh Tower): A completed 6-book middle-grade secondary-world fantasy sequence (Scholastic, 2000-2001), distinct from Garth Nix's Old Kingdom and Keys to the Kingdom universes: an unrelated setting split between the underground Castle and the sunlit surface world Aenir/the Veil.
